The finalists for the 2014 CBC Short Story Prize have been announced and Jane Eaton Hamilton of Vancouver has made the list for her short story Smiley. The author of seven books, Jane previously won the prize for The Lost Boy in 2003. Smiley is a coming of age short story about a child in South Africa coming to terms with gender issues and first love.

Here’s a great opportunity for writers interested in strengthening their craft. Author Tracey Richardson is giving an introductory novel writing course in Owen Sound, Ont.
