Welcome to Canadian Lesfic, a site that will showcase Canadian lesbian fiction authors. Let me tell you a story…
In early January, the Virtual Living Room Yahoogroup (VLR), a gathering place for readers and writers of lesbian fiction, held a Spot-On featuring Canadian authors. Henriette Bookgeek, one of the organizers and hosts, said it was difficult to track down Canadian authors. She was also surprised at how many of us there are, a reaction I suspect many would share.
Around the same time, a couple of authors were lamenting how difficult it can be to get the word out about Canadian lesbian fiction. As I read the conversation, it occurred to me that Canadian authors could benefit from a web presence similar to UK Lesfic, a site Claire Ashton and Cari Hunter set up to showcase UK authors. I proposed the site in the VLR, and the rest is herstory.
The first thing I did was call for volunteers to help manage what we hope will be a vibrant and interesting place to visit. Anne Azel, Liz Bugg, Lois Cloarec Hart, Benny Lawrence, and Tracey Richardson quickly jumped on board. Anne is our newshound, Liz will manage guest blogs, Benny and Lois are in charge of cataloguing all the wonderful information about Canadian lesbian fiction authors and our books, Tracey is handling events and (wo)manning our Twitter account, and I’m the tech gal who’ll keep the lights on. Benny is also our resident cartoonist.
Here’s what we hope Canadian Lesfic will do for Canadian lesbian fiction authors:
Anne Azel – I’m pleased to play a small part in the establishment of the Canadian LesFic site. Canada is producing high quality lesbian fiction in a style that is uniquely Canadian. This site will allow the readers of the world an opportunity to become aware of this exciting body of literature.
Liz Bugg – I am thrilled not only to be involved in the creation of Canadian LesFic, but also by the fact that at long last a site will exist to showcase lesbian fiction by Canadians. I hope that as the site grows and gains recognition, readers within Canada and around the world will discover the wealth of lesbian fiction by Canadian writers.
Sarah Ettritch – I hope the site will raise awareness of Canadian lesbian fiction authors and our books. I want Canadian Lesfic to become the go-to place for anyone who wants information about Canadian authors, and for those looking for interesting books to read.
Lois Cloarec Hart – In a world increasingly crowded with options for readers, I’m hopeful that the new Canadian Lesfic site will help introduce our talented northern writers to a wider audience.
Benny Lawrence – I’m hoping that the site will provide a platform for Canadian wallflowers who otherwise would be sitting in the metaphorical corner of the Internet waiting for a dance invitation. And also that we can do something about the world’s critical shortage of moose puns.
Tracey Richardson – A site for Canadian authors of lesbian fiction will, I hope, help keep us grounded in our Canadian roots. We have a rich and diverse culture and history of our own, but our Canadian identity also, I believe, gives us a unique perspective on America when we do choose to write about American characters and settings. I hope you will join and support me and my fellow Canadian author friends in this journey of lesbian fiction.
As you can see, we have high hopes for the site. We hope you’ll get involved and help us make this the place to visit for Canadian lesbian fiction.
